Another day at sea

We are making our way over the Atlantic Ocean with clear skies and wind in our sails, and even though we are far from home, or any land at all, I couldn’t be happier than I am right now.

This Sunday brought us a nice, sunny weather and calm winds. We have been sailing smoothly since our departure from Cape Verde, and this day was no exception from that. Normally we would have classes during the day when we weren’t working, but since it was Sunday it meant we had our class free day. So, I spent my day relaxing in the sun reading, or bothering my friends who were working on deck. The rest of my time I spent working in “byssan”, which means the kitchen. I usually don’t really like working there, but this time it was quite fun! Me and my friend who I was working served the other pupils lunch, and on our night watch we made French toast. I might have eaten at least eight pieces of toast that night… It was delicious.

Something I have been thinking about during our trip is how much I feel at home when I’m on the ship. Of course, Gunilla doesn’t have all the comfortabilities that my home has, but that doesn’t really matter to me. I like not being connected to Wi-Fi at all times, and not being able to know what’s happening at home. And I do actually like all the physical work we get to do, because I feel like I’m really helping Gunilla moving forward, and that is a great feeling! I feel at home here, even though we are quite literally in the middle of nowhere. This doesn’t mean that I don’t miss Sweden at all, because I do. I miss my friends and family, but I wouldn’t say that I’m homesick, because I wouldn’t like to be anywhere else than where I am right now.
