A day at sea

Today I woke up at midnight because I had watch. It was cold and dark outside. The seas ran high, and some of us were seasick. We had roll call out on deck, and then we got to work. The first thing my watch had to do was to climb in the rig to secure the main sail to the beam.

It was kind of a scary climbing in the dark. It did not help that the higher I went, the more it rocked. The main sail is heavy, so having my friends with me was nice. It probably took us one hour before we were done. After securing the main sail, we had to turn 180 degrees; otherwise, we would have sailed up to Morocco. The manover we did was called “ ko vända”. After the manover our watch was over, so I went to bed. I slept from 04:00 to 11:00.

I didn’t sleep very much due to the rough seas. I woke up to my comrade telling me that there were dolphins outside. This flipped a switch in me, making me get out of bed fast. When I came outside there was a pod of dolphins. It was so amazing seeing them jumping out of the water and playing in our waves. They did not stay for long so I when inside again. This was my day on T/S Gunilla.
