Christmas disco

Oh what a day! After long days of sailing back and forth across the English canal we finally started to at least have the right course towards Jersey. It was all dark and quiet on deck, but suddenly strobe light coated the sky without a noise. We took a few minutes to just lay on deck and enjoy the view of “nature’s disco” as our first officer said.

When our eyelids started to feel heavy again and the dreams was just about to carry us off, but then the wind went out and every sail had to be taken down as well as furled. We even had to delay our nightly fika! However, as soon as we all had some cinnamon bun-sponge in our stomachs the energy levels rose till the sky as everyone flew up the masts. Let me tell you what a lovely view; the sunrise was clear in front of us, while the lightning from earlier still surrounded it. We were done just until the change of watches and could go straight from the mast head to bed.

I almost thought I was dreaming when christmas songs echoed through the corridors, but when I got up to get lunch the whole room was coated in christmas decor — what a strange but I suppose positive surprise! Even though it is way too early to begin with the good old songs, I couldn't help All I want for Christmas playing over and over again in my mind. It was actually quite hard to study while being stuck on that melody. Later on it was time for watch again; nothing special about that one except the scrumptious dinner consisting of potatoes, bearnaise and pork (or vegetarian meatballs).

So far, so good, but what an remarkable evening we had! A major part of the offwatch stayed up late, because we all knew there were going to be scones to fika. Around ten o’clock music started to play loudly and of course we had to go up and have a look (and perhaps to get ourselves a scone or two as well). You can say that if the lightning from the night’s watch was called disco; this must have been a full on rave! Music blasted through the speakers, lights went on and off and people sang and screamed, danced and jumped up and down. It was really the absolute best ten o’clock fika I’ve ever been on. Everyone sang, clapped their hands, ate scones and had a good time together. But when we were out of scones and songs to sing it was time to head back to bed and put an end to this wonderful day.
