D-Day

Come with me and follow up on our trip to the D-day beach! A day full of learning and lots of interesting new knowledge. Today we were at the D-day beaches in Normandie and the American and German cemeteries.

We woke up at 7 o’clock, so we could eat breakfast and get ready for lining up at 8 o'clock. Afterwards we went to the bus that we took to our first visit, the so called ”battery”, excess weapons for the Germans to use. It was interesting to see but it was also terrifying. Our guide was very nice, he was answering our questions in a good way so we could comprehend more.

Then we went to the American cemetery and Omaha Beach, they were on the same spot. It was very a beautiful place, but at the same time, yet a terrifying history behind it. Every grave looked the same, the only difference was that the christian had a cross and the jews had a star of David.

Our last visit was the German cemetery. It was definitely not as well taken care of. The graves, unlike the American cemetery, were only a ”stone” in the ground. A large difference between the two cemeteries, was that the American, each soldier had their own grave. But at the German graveyard, two or three soldiers shared a grave. ”Two German soldiers”, no names, no message of honor and glory.

Yet after a long, cold and tiring day, it was still very interesting and it taught me a lot. It’s difficult to understand that these things have happened for real, at these places we’ve just visited. It’s shocking to see what a difference there is between the two cemeteries, kind of sad. Although, understandable.
