The day began with breakfast at 7 o’clock, followed by assembly at 8.
After the assembly, some of us were going to walk to the Jersey War Tunnels, which were about an hour’s walk from the boat. When we arrived, we each received an identity card belonging to a local resident who had died during the German occupation. I received a card belonging to a woman named Louisa Gould. She was arrested by the Germans because she had hidden a Russian child soldier who had been forced to work as a slave for them. There is a film about her called Another Mother’s Son.Inside the tunnels, we saw how they were built and learned about the harsh conditions faced by the Russian forced laborers — starvation, unsafe working conditions, and brutal treatment. Many Russian slaves died and were buried in the tunnels due to this cruelty. We also looked at German equipment that had been left behind, such as uniforms, weapons, radio gear, grenades, and more. On the way back from the tunnels, we walked along the beach and admired how beautiful it was. We also passed by a shop where we bought some snacks for the movie night on the boat.
And that was all from me today.
