More than halfway

We are now more than halfway through the Atlantic Ocean. Nine days have passed by on our voyage and the climate gets more humid for every night. Massive waves are throwing us from portside to starbord and the depth is about 5 kilometres.

Ocean currents with seaweed are also seen from
everywhere and you always look out trying to distinguish the siluette or at least a single sign of a whale, sea turtle or shark.

The days pass by quickly, probably due to the routines and constant maintenance work. We don’t have much spare time, if you really want to enjoy time with your friends, you have to prioritize that in front of sleep. However, me and two of my cabin friends exercise every evening, it doesn’t take that much time and we can get the best out of two worlds.

Yesterday the entire crew watched “Pirates of the Caribbean” on sailcloth with a generous amount of popcorn. While the movie was playing, a 200-meter cargo ship heading for India was seen far away in the dark. A rare sight in these areas. On the watches, we remove oxidation, paint, scrub the deck and have lectures about sail knowledge. And that reiterates day after day.

Today was a special day though, after our watch I went to bed and slept. After an hour, I woke up, someone screamed something about killer whales outside and I immediately got up and ran out on deck. At first I couldn’t see anything, nothing but the normal ocean, but then, I saw a huge creature around 4 meters swimming right next to our vessel. I just stood there and observed the magic moment. Out of nowhere, another one showed up, and then another one and so on. I estimated it to be around ten beluga whales, it was not killer whales as the reputation said.

The last period of our watch, while I was steering the boat, a squal came by. The rain was instantly smashing down, the handles on the steering wheel got slippery and at the same time I had to change the rudder angle brutally in order to evade the strong winds. My clothes got drowned in water, and I could feel the water slowly reaching my socks and even my underwear.

This day was one of the best days on the Atlantic Ocean, luckily this happened today on my blog day, which means you just read about one of the best days, lucky you!
