Our first day at sea- a day of joy and seasickness

After an exciting week in Morocco with lots of new experiences, we were all ready to sail.

Today was our first day at sea, and everyone were in a good mood. The sun was shining, and we were all enjoying every second of it. It was unreal that this was finally happening, it was like a dream. We were now doing what we had waited to do for-I don’t know how long: sailing!

We were laying at the front deck enjoying the good vibrations when suddenly the seasick kicked in. in what seemed like just two seconds at least 1/3 of us where hanging over the boat puking. I can not say it was a very beautiful sight. Me that was one of the lucky ones that did not get sick, had to help the others who did. I was running from one side of the boat to the other with dry bread and water trying to help all my friends stay hydrated. This was a very interesting experience, thinking of that in some strange kind of way I thought that it was funny at the same time I was feeling sorry for them. I guess this is what happens first time sailors (or sprogs as they say in the British navy)…

Today was also the day of our first day at watch, which became very interesting thinking of the current situation at the boat. “Byssan”(the kitchen) was the worst place to be, and my friends who got the job as “backisar” (the people who job in “byssan”), became immediately ill. In there they had to go through four hours of oil-smells and no fresh air, which is not precisely good conditions when you’re feeling sick. I’m sure that if I had have to work in there my first day at sea I would’ve been sick too.

After all, this unique day also became a really great day with many new, interesting, funny and joyful experiences. I am very happy to know that this is just one of the many fantastic days we are going to have on T/S Gunilla!
